A Legacy of Tradition and Effort

The story of Taquería Casa Grande is a reflection of a family legacy that began with José Ruiz, the father of Abraham Ruiz González. It was within this family that the love for Mexican food was born, a passion that has always been at the heart of their culture and traditions. Abraham grew up in a family of merchants, in an environment full of learning and hard work, specifically revolving around the preparation and sale of food and tacos. This legacy not only represented a trade but also a tradition that became the foundation of a dream that would eventually transcend borders.

This story traces back to the 1950s in San José de Gracia, Jalisco, where José Ruiz and his brother, Victoriano Vargas, established a small taco stand. This business was not just a place to sell tacos but one of the pioneers that marked the beginning of the taco revolution in 1957. Later, the business expanded to Mexico City, where Abraham began to learn the trade, surrounded by his father, his uncle, and other people passionate about Mexican gastronomy.

In the 1980s, Abraham emigrated to Chicago with great dreams of prosperity. He joined his uncles, Camerino and Miguel González, who already had experience working in the food business in both Mexico and the United States. Abraham’s first experience in Chicago was working at his uncle’s restaurant, where he started from the bottom, dedicating himself to hard work and learning every aspect of the business. Over time, his efforts paid off, and he rose to the position of manager, gaining invaluable experience in managing and growing a business.

Eventually, Abraham decided to take an even bigger step. Inspired by his roots and with the support of Rosa Zepeda, who believed in his vision, he began working on his own project. In the 1990s, after searching for the perfect location, he found an ideal spot in Cicero, Illinois, where he established his business. Thus, in 1990, Taquería Casa Grande opened its doors, blending family traditions with a unique touch that quickly captured the attention of the community.

Although Abraham and his team initially had doubts about the project’s success, reality exceeded their expectations. The Latino and Anglo-American communities warmly embraced the taquería, which quickly became a local favorite. Its unique style and flavor became its identity, and this success encouraged Abraham to dream bigger. Soon, he expanded the business by opening three additional locations in Illinois, all maintaining the authenticity and quality that defined Taquería Casa Grande.

Today, the business continues to thrive, thanks in large part to the active participation of Abraham’s children, Jennifer and Christopher Ruiz. They play essential roles in managing and operating the restaurants, bringing fresh energy and innovation while maintaining the family legacy. The taquería has also expanded its services with initiatives like “taquizas at home,” allowing them to reach their customers directly and strengthen their presence in the community.

Over the course of more than three decades, Taquería Casa Grande has received numerous recognitions and accolades, becoming a cornerstone of the community. This success would not have been possible without Abraham’s dedication, his family’s hard work, and the unwavering support of their customers, who have been the foundation of their continuous growth.

Today, Taquería Casa Grande proudly celebrates over 30 years of history, committed to preserving its roots, offering exceptional service, and providing a space where people can enjoy authentic Mexican food. Built on tradition, effort, and a love for gastronomy, the taquería remains an example of how passion and hard work can turn a dream into a story of success that transcends generations.
